Edit What this paper is about Content
MAORI300 is a paper designed for students to interact and work with Indigenous communities; it is a paper that can be taken by any University of Waikato student, is one of the Work and Integrated Learning (WIL) offerings for BA and BSoc.Sc. students, and is a compulsory WIL paper for students enrolled in one of the three majors in the Faculty of Māori and Indigenous Studies. This paper focuses on the critical learnings, knowledges, and pedagogies related to working with whenua, whānau, hapū, iwi, Māori, Pacific, and Indigenous communities.

In Working with Indigenous Communities you will work independently with one of the multiple and diverse Indigenous groupings around the regions and beyond, whether that be one of your own communities, an Indigenous organisation, the University, or with an existing organised activity such as a sports team or marae/hapū/trust.

Enrollment in MAORI300 is only the first step of the process for this paper. After enrolling in the paper, there are practical steps that need to be completed before working with a community. For all students, the next step involves meeting with the paper convenor to discuss the community group/organisation you would like to work with. There will not be any weekly lectures after the first one on Tuesday 11th July and no weekly tutorials. Instead, fortnightly Zoom sessions will offer opportunities to communicate with the paper convenor. Students can also contact the paper convenor via email and Moodle during her office hours posted in Moodle.
